O.K. I successfully ripped/encoded two episodes of X-Files using Gordian Knot. I attempted to rip/encode Rules of Engagement - across 2 CDs. The file size came out to 250MB LARGER than the 2CDs I told GKnot to do. I tried everything AC3 sound, regular sound, and still - 250MB larger. Then a friend told me that my X-Files rips were great except I forgot to IVTC them. So - I ripped a 3rd episode of X-Files, EVERYTHING was the same, EXCEPT I IVTC'd it, which I hadn't done before. Lo and behold, the X-Files episode was about 150MB larger than 1CD.

I know I have to IVTC... what do I have to change to make it fit on 1CD or 2CD's if I tell it too? Do I have to *fudge* the CD size? I don't see how that works as GKnot gives you 640MB as the smallest possible size will work. It will still be over the 700MB mark if 1CD is 150 MB larger and 2CD is 250 MB larger.

Does the FPS have something to do with this? I've been using 29.970 FPS as I was told this was better than 23.976 FPS the guide says to use.

Hope I was clear enough, in short, how do I apply IVTC and make the divx fit on 1 or 2 CD's as specified using GKnot. Second, which is better FPS? @9.970 or 23.976???

TIA!

Yo khayman, I was having the exact same problem. The answer is:
When you're in DVD2AVI you first set the Field operation to NONE, then preview your movie. If the framerate is 29.970 and the FILM percentage is higher than 95% you can activate Forced Film then... Run the preview again, if everything worked fine the framerate turned to 23.976... And that's what you should use in Gknot in order to get the correct frame count. Well actually I was told that Gknot automatically chooses the right framerate when you load the DVD2AVI project, so you don't have to worry about it...

and about IVTC...
Doom9 said on his guide that you don't have to check it, eventhough on GKnot is written to leave it checked by default...so it's up to you...
hope I've helped

About IVTC:

You may want to go frame-by-frame during a scene with movement to see if you have duplicate frames. If the content was shot at 30 fps, you'll see continuous movement. If at 24, and Telecined, you will see duplicates. If the TV show was shot with video cameras, then it wasn't telecined. Interlaced sources may confuse things further.

As Sonic said: A 29.97 NTSC DVD run through DVD2AVI with Force FILM will change the frame rate to 23.976 automatically.

If your source was Telecined, but doesn't look good frame-by-frame with Force FILM, you can use other IVTC options -- either in Gknot or manually. If using an IVTC other than Force FILM, manually change the framerate from 29.97 to 23.976 in GKnot.
