View Full Version : Anybody tested On2's VP5 codec ?

Just asking this 'cause On2 pretends this is (could ?) be the best codec on earth...

Well, when i see what RV9 does (which is based on VP4 - correct me if i'm wrong...), i think this may not only be a marketing announce, but a little true too.

The last multi-codecs comparison from Doom9 only considered VP4, and there seems to be some difficulties to find On2 Pro Encoder 4.0, so my questions are:
1) has anybody here tested VP5 ?
2) does anybody know where the encoder can be find ?

on2 won't talk to me anymore :(

considering that it was already hard to get vp4 I doubt you'll find anybody who can test it properly. And the people having access cannot talk about it publicly...

Ok, i understand...
But that's a shame, how do they want to make peple use it then ?
Maybe i'm too stupid :)

they want just commercial users.. large corporations who want to stream video via their servers... Even vp4 wasn't (and still isn't) readily available for "normal" users...

I think it isn't. Why should real dump their own encoding methods which were good. Have you seen lord of the rings trailer encoded in real 8 @ 1000 b ? People just says it is vp4, because almost on the same time that real announced real9 on2 said that they have licended vp4 for real. I only think that this means just an option to view vp4 files using real player. And just one thing: Real 9 relies very heavily on postprocessing like older real codecs, but vp3 doesn't do postprocessing at all or it is very small.

OK, thanx to everybody for the answers, I understand now why i was able to find the encoder.
I just wrote to ON2, and the only thing they can do for me is to encode my videos for me (with my bitrate and resolution) and send me a betaSP tape (what the hell is this ? VHS ? DV ?) back...
Well, i guess i won't be able to test this codec...
No matter, XviD or RV9 are enough for me :)
Then, bye everybody, time for holidays :)

BetaSP is a studio-system for storage of videos.
You will need a lot of money for buying such a machine:sly:
