After numerous attempts at getting a faster ripping speed with my dvr-104 I finally acheived that goal. I was only ripping between 1.9x and 2.0x. Here are my maching specs.

Windows XP
Athlon XP +1800
Epox 8kha+

This is my story :)

I first updated the bios for my epox. This gave me an option to 'ENABLE UDMA' for cd-roms.

I enabled this and checked the properties on the secondary ide channel and it did switch transfer mode from pio to ultra dma mode 2.

But still it would not ripp faster. I tried setting back to pio mode and still no go!

Here was the magic for me. I started up Dvd-Decrypter and started my ripp. I then stopped the ripp while leaving dvd-decrypter open and the changed the transfer mode to pio and applied that. Then went back immediately and set the mode back to udma mode 2.

Started the ripping process again and I'n now ripping between 3.5 and 6.

I hope this may help someone else out there.

The Epox 8kha+ has a bug, which stops the full speed of any DVD or CDROM on IDE channel 1. You can fix it one of 2 ways-

1. Update bios to latest http://www.epox.nl/english/support/bios/socketa.htm and then turn the NEW option on in the BIOS IDE settings.

2. Swap the IDE cables around, so that the DVD\CDROM cable is plugged into IDE socket 0- what, you thought that only hard drives could be plugged into IDE channel 0? It makes no difference to boot up, except that the DVD\CDROM get listed first on the POST screen.

I have used both methods, so I know they work.

Once I had the problem that I couldn't switch my DVD-ROM to DMA mode. XP would always reset it to PIO after rebooting.

Both my CD-RW burner and my DVD-ROM drive are connected to IDE channel 1 (two HDDs at channel 0, RAID0). A BIOS upgrade didn't make a difference. But this did:

I switched the master/slave status of the DVD and the CD-RW drives, and - tadaaaa - DMA for both drives acitvated! Ripping speed is now four to five times higher.
