View Full Version : Ogg Vorbis overhead in an OGM?

I want to mux an Ogg Vorbis 80 kbps audio stream and a DivX 5.0.2 2-pass (about 915 kbps) video stream. Movie is 98 min long, 1.85:1 aspect (if that is any help).
How much should I allow for the muxing overhead? I've looked at other relevant threads in this forum - doesn't seem to be a simple answer, but practical suggestions, based on significant experience, would be welcomed.
thanx

Yeah I did, but the comments there give widely varying overhead estimates.
So for a 700 MB rip, is the overhead 0.33 %, 0.94 %, 2100 KB, 3.4 MB, 2.7 MB, 7 MB or what? (these derived from the comments there).
What say you?

I did my last encodes this way:
- assumed 64kbps (8kb) for sound
- encoded the movie with "total size-(length of movie*sound bitrate)"
- encoded the sound - bitrate is usually below 64kbps.
After that, mu'xing it and still having a1mb too small file ;)
The mu'xing overhead is <1% in our cases.

the maximum overhead i have ever got was about 4megs on a 862mb file (99mins CD)
but mostly lies in about 1-2megs in this size
Mostly i got between 3 and 4 MB Overhead.
Here some facts, all using OggDS 0.9.9.1, XviD, 1 audio stream 96 kbit/s and all files between 701 and 703 MB.
Movie playtime Overhead
87,04 min 3,9 MB
90,35 min 3,7 MB
92,26 min 3,6 MB
93,00 min 3,6 MB
94,24 min 3,5 MB
100,11 min 3,4 MB
102,27 min 3,1 MB (audio 80 kbit/s)
So i think, for your encode you'll need about 3,5 MB.

You were spot on - the actual overhead was 3.4 MB. This happens to be close to the 3.3 MB 1x ac3 muxing overhead as calculated by GKnot0.26b as someone in the "Exact OV muxing overhead" thread suggested - would be interesting to see how consistent that is.
This was DivX 5.0.2 98 min with Ogg Vorbis 80 kbps - interesting that in this case the video type hasn't seemed to matter.
thanx for everyone's contributions
