View Full Version : Higher or lower resolution?

I want my divx to be as good as possible, but I have a problem in Gordian Knot under Resolution. I've read the guides but still I don't know what Output Resolution I should have...
BTW; The Gladiator - 2 cds...
640*272
Bits/(Pixel*Frame)
0.272
56.6% of 0.480 Compessibility Test(!)
Is this ok, or should I adjust it? Will a higher resolution give better quality? Low resolution makes higher Bits/(Pixel*Frame), but the quality might be bad!? (I once tried with very low resolution and very high Bits/(Pixel*Frame) = bad quality...)
I've posted this in the Newbies section, so please, tell me if I should increase the resolution a bit, og maybe lower it. Thanks!

640x272 seems OK to me. The bitrate per pixel is high enough.

Yeah. The resoultion looks fine to me too.
And if you're using divx 5.xx, the bits/pixel % is fine, too.
take care

I'm using divx 5.0x...
640x272 is ok, but what will happen if I increase the resolution a bit? The bits/pixel will decrease, but with higher resolution, what result will I get? Better or worse?
Or maybe it's not so important which resolution I choose..? Hoping for answers! If not, I'll have to find out myself... Make several divx and compare them. Hmm...

Increasing the resolution will mean better sharpness in still scenes, but worse quality in action scenes
Decreasing the resolution means worse sharpness in still scenes, but better quality in action scenes.

Thanks! I guess I just follow the guide then...
It's not a good idea to go much below 0.17 bits/pixel*frame
If you go for 1 CD stay close to 0.17
If you go for 2 CDs stay around 0.25
If TV bits/pixel*frame is below ~0.13 you should raise your bitrate (and go for more CDs).
If I do this, I guess my movie will be good. Don't think it's very important whether the resolution is 640*272 or 672*288! Correct me if I'm wrong - take care!

hi - if u watch ur movie at a resolution that is a multiple of ur source u get a small quality increase ( ... well, u should try and see ) ... so if u watch ur movie at 640, then maybe that is the res ? i usually give movies that have a lot of motion and/or noise ( eg action ) a bit less res, but something that has less motion and clean source ( eg. drama ) more res. just as a "general" rule - really depends on source and ur perception of what is good i think.
