how do i join divx movies?

the second .avi goes out of sync after i append it to the first one

Make sure you append at keyframes (hold down shift). If that doesn't work maybe you should demux each seperately first and find some nice audio software to join the wavs (reencoding might be unavoidable ... not sure, it depends on format I guess). Any video editing software with audio exporting capabilities shold do (premiere or vegas video f.i.).

THEN join in VD (after appending the two videos, of course).

If your audio is vbr mp3, use Nandub instead. Vdub support cbr mp3 only.
