View Full Version : How to 2 Computer Networking-File Sharing

Deepa DvD

Hello Everyone!
To make things faster I want to connect my 2 computers together so I can share files. Both of the Computers have the Network Cards (that's what it's called - right?)

The problem is one of them is Win XP (home edition) and the other is Win 98. Win XP says the computer is connected but Win 98 can't find the Win XP computer. What am I doing wrong? I connected them with 1 cable, Without the Network Routher thingy.
Does it have to do with how the Hard Drives are formatted? (NTSF or something) How do I make it work?

I'd appreciate your help!
Thanks in Advance!:)

Are you using a crossover cable? If not, you need to get one or use a hub...

If you are running winXP, simply run the networking setup wizard and it will create a disk that you can run on the win98 computer and set it up properly.

I highly suggest a hub, a switch will be more efficient with 3 or more computers. You need to set the workgroup names to the same name, the Microsoft default is MSHOME, right click on Network neighborhood on the 98 box, then preferences, then on the Identification tab at the top, you'll have to reboot. The easy way to do all of this is run the network configuration Wizard in XP, make the disk when it asks you too, then run the disk on the 98 box. Also, make sure your cables are connected well, they should be green on the NIC (network interface card). Email me if you need anymore help, I've just networked 6 computers in my house and have a lot of expertise in the home networking area. william at techwill.net

very good point... if you have manually edited the services that winxp can start.. make sure Server and Workstaion services are active! Otherwise you'll be going round in circles without finding out any information on why it isnt working :)

i think you have to create a user account on the xp machine which you can then use to log the other machine in. and unless you log in as administrator you have to share at least one directory (otherwise this would be useless anyway)
at least thats how it works in 2k and since both are based on nt...
btw: i really recommend using a switch, so its much easier for your friends to participate in your network.
and there is no need to put the computers into the same workgroup, this only makes it faster for them to find each other.

to the very experienced one: in win98 there was this remote administration feature, you could set a remote administration password and access everything on this computer with anoter win98 machine if you knew this password. i think you had to select properties of the desired computer to enter the password and then access its files. i still have one win98 computer with remote administration activated, but my other computers are win2k now. do you know how i can use win2k to remote administrate this computer?

Thanks for your help guys!!!
I appreciate it!:)

So I finally got it to work! But I have a little problem remaining. On both of the computers, I can only open the Shared Documents folders. Now how can I access the whole C & D (Hard Disk) Drives on both of the computers.

smokeslikeapoet, what are the benefits if I get a hub (as you suggested)?
Thanks In Advance!:)

you have to share drives (in win98 you might have to install microsoft file & printing sharing under protocals)... in explorer right-click on a drive->properties then click at on the sharing tab at the top ;)

Another tip, it's easier to make Win9x or ME the "server" for file and print sharing because of the lack of security built into the system. In otherwords hook your computer directly to the Win9x box and share it with the XP box.

I got that working, and another thing remaining.
I want to share the printer. The printer is hooked/installed with Win 98. So how do I share the printer so I can just click print on the Win XP and it'll just print on the printer.
Thanks In Advance!:)

if you have file and printer sharing installed on your win98 machine (which i assume you have done ;)) then on your winxp machine just add a new printer and when it asks you whether it's a local printer or network pinter choose network... it should be easy from then on :)

Well after having my network thing setup with two computers Win98 and XP. It used to work fine. Now I upgraded my Win98 computer to Win2k. So I re-created the floppy from WinXP (netsetup.exe thingy) and put it in Win2k. But Win2k gives me a error message that this is not supported by Win2k. It says it's supported by Win98, Win98se, Win ME (which many Hate), and WinXP. And win2k isn't listed on the error log thingy. So win2k dosen't take the floppy. I thought Win2k was one of the best OS by Microsoft. Am I missing something here? I tried setting up a network through Win2k, but couldn't after messing around wit it for 3 days. Can you guys please help me out. I do like Win2k and I dont want to go back to Win98.

ThanX in Advance!

BTW: I didn't create a new thread, i thought maybe it'd be better reusing my old thread.

If you want to share resources from the win2k machine, make sure to enable the guest account in the system control/users and passwords-options, it's disabled by standard.

After that, everything should work fine.

thanx for the reply bro!!! I appreciate it!!! The guest thingy is enabled, it was there as default, is there anything else i have to do? or am I missing something here? I can't even access the WinXP computer from Win2k or access Win2k from the WinXP computer. But WinXP knows that the cable is connected (direct cable;yellow) beacuse when I turn off the Win2k computer WinXP says Local Area Connection " a network cable is unplugged" on both of the computers in WinXP and Win2k. But I cant acess each other Hard drives. I tried My network places on XP and 2k. I know under properties i have the C drive shared. But it doesen't show up.

ThanX in Advance!!!!! :)

The first thing to try is pinging the hosts. From the Win2k machine, open a command prompt and attempt to ping the WinXP machine. If that succeeds, then you know for certain you have connectivity. After that is verified, from the WinXP machine, on a command prompt type
\\Win2khostNameHere\X$ and press enter. (Replace Win2kHostName with the name of the Win2k computer, and X$ with the letter of the harddrive on the Win2k machine). Assuming that goes as planned, a login/password box will appear. In the username field, type Win2kHostName\UserName where Win2kHostName is again the Win2k host, and UserName is a local user on the Win2k machine. Put that local user's password into the password field and press enter. This should bring up the hard drive via the default Administrative shares that are set in Win2k.

This is WinXP, but Win2000 is similar.

1: Make sure your on the same Workgroup in Network Identification and give your computer a unique name.
(popular group names: workgroup or mshome)

2: Open the status window of your Local Area Connection Properties. It should say enabled and you will see packets sent and received.

2: Make sure Internet Protocal TCP/IP general settings are set to optain IP address automatically.

3: Double check File and Printer sharing is enabled in your Local Area Connection Properties.

4: Make a shared resource (Right click on files or printers and click sharing). You need to know your Administrator passwords for both computers.

5: Format both computers and reinstall a fresh copy of Linux.

You can't use DHCP on a crossover cable, the IP addresses need to be specified.

(one of the computers could obviously be running a dhcp server, in which case you could ;) )

First of all thank you guys for helping me!!!!! I appreciate it!!!!!
@ Koepi, int 21h, Emp3r0r, Nic, and others who previously helped me

I tried that above and it doesen't work. Both of the computers are on the same workgroup (STUDIO) and I type the thing in Command Prompt: \\Compaq\C$ and it says the newtwork path is invalid. I know the cables connected because when I go to the WinXP machine under My network places>>view network connections/ connection 1 is enabled. But when I go to my network places on the Win2k machine>>Entire Network or Computers Near Me, nothing is there. but when I unplug the wires it says a network cable is unplugged on both of the machines. (so that proves theres connection right?)

I dont know what DHCP is?

I wonder why Win2k didnt take that floppy and Win98 did? Looking forward on more help :)

ThanX in Advance!!!!!! :)

(so that proves theres connection right?)

Go to the connection status of your ethernet connection. It should say there has been packets sent and received like in this screenshot (http://jvance.com/images/internet.png).

dhcp gives clients an IP address

try setting the ip of each computer manually... instead of using dhcp

server internet connection
- sharing enabled
server ethernet connection
- 192.168.0.1
client ethernet connection
- 192.168.0.2

Annoyances website (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp) helped me

I think you are somewhat confused here with the advice you are providing.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is to share a specific LAN connection over another LAN connection. It does this by running a limited DHCP server on the machine that is doing the sharing. You have to have 2 Ethernet cards (obviously) for this to work correctly. And even then, when you configure this, you want the clients to be configured for automatically requesting IP, so that the DHCP server on the computer doing the sharing will give out the IP.

Deepa needs to specify the IPs for both computers. Then try pinging the IPs from each computer.

Also, that plugged in / unplugged indication from Windows is pretty useless, AFAIK, its just using the link status of the Ethernet card... and that won't necessarily indicate a correctly configured network.

He should spend the $25-$35 and get a 100MBPS hub. He'll be much happier.

IIRC , it can be very easy .(i have read this thread and i too are NOW confused :D) If you just wants to share files via computers then Just remove everything apart from TCP/IP , client for microsoft windows and net-bios from the network cards (control panel> network>"select network card". on the properties of tcp/ip on your card type in a ip address "192.168.0.1" , do the same for the other computer ("192.168.0.2") (default gateway) and restart both computers , then from pc1 (192.168.0.1) Start>run>cmd(or command (win98)) then type "ping 192.168.0.2" if you get 100% loss then somethings wrong ;) after you get a response , you can move on to enabling sharing , then right clicking on the folders / drives you want to share ,and selecting share, its that easy ;):D. The actual physical layout/ connection does not effect the software configuration so i would check everything twice. I don't like ICS , so i go for a proxy on the serve machine to only allow my other pc access. This works fine , but only for http.

packets sent and received like in this screenshot.

Yes, that does display.
Deepa needs to specify the IPs for both computers. Then try pinging the IPs from each computer.
Yes, I am going to try to do that. Can you tell me where do I set that?
(control panel> network>"select network card". on the properties of tcp/ip on your card type in a ip address "192.168.0.1" , do the same for the other computer ("192.168.0.2") (default gateway) and restart both computers , then from pc1 (192.168.0.1) Start>run>cmd(or command (win98)) then type "ping 192.168.0.2"
Yes I will give that a shot also!

I'll post the results a.s.a.p

Big ThanX to all of you guys helping me out!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) I appreciate it!!!

BTW- Machine 1 is Win2k and machine 2 is WinXP (home edition) just a little reminder.

Deepa DvD
10th June 2003, 05:14
Ok, this is what i did: M1 (machine1)= Win2k M2= WinXP (home ed.)

In M1 I typed up the 192.168.0.1 in ip address. And on M2 I typed 192.168.0.2 After that I restarted went to cmd in M1 and typed ping 192.168.0.2 And I got this message below. Look at the attachment. (actually click on the URL on the bottom)

I already have the folders, drive(s) as shared on both computers before doing this. Should I change them to not shared and change the again as shared (if that will make any difference) I went into My network places on both of the machines and none of the either folders, documents show up which are shared on either of the computers. In M2 I can see in My Network places, the folders I am sharing on M2. When I go to My Network Places in M1 I can't even see the files, folders I'm sharing on M1. Is it beacause that's Win2k not WinXP? This is the situation. Still no luck.:(

Again, I appreciate all of you guys helping me out!!!!:) ThanX!!!!!

10th June 2003, 11:16
hmmm , ok :p i don't suppose you are running a firewall are you? i have a few suggestions , first i would check (if you have one) that your firewall is disabled (just for testing not for ever ;)) make sure you do this on both , turn off XP's firewall Cr*p (under advanced in properties of NIC/connection) then the next thing i would do would be to UN-install both Network cards , and restart , both will be recognised and both will (hopefully make connection to the other pc ) did you make sure that both Network cards have the same protocols? i.e Only the three stated above NO more? If XP/2k do not establish a connection then do the same as i stated above (you may of altered something be accident , reinstalling the hardware will set back to default).just a few things to try.

It says that this adapter is part of the network bridge. to remove this adapter from the network bridge or to modify bridge settings, right click on the network bridge and click properties. (it has a another tab that says configure) Ok then i right click also on the network bridge thingy and cant find Advanced. PLeeze help.

Gradually acquiring the parts for a second PC so I can network them and play the wife at her fave game Red Alert 2, anyway I can build a PC from scratch no prob but admit i was completely in the dark as to how to go about setting up a network, anyway this has helped loads. One thing to the mods don't delete this thread for a while I'll be needing it before long.
One more thing, earlier in the thread it was mentioned that people seem to hate win ME. Why is this I've been using it since release without any real problems, none that a format every 4-6 months did't cure.

My rig

P4 1.8 (512k cache)soon to be a P4 2.8 533 bus, but the wife says not allowed to get one until its Less than £200 at the minute its £204(not long now)
MSI 648 max mobo (was horibly incompatible with my 9700 pro but last bios update fixed that) it now runs sweet as a nut (mind you my ram doesn't like being over clocked, it lies down and vomits)
2x 256mb ddr 2700 ram
80 gb IBM deskstar hdd (just ordered 185 gb deskstar 180 gxp)I know people drip about IBM hdd but I've had this for over 2 years now and no probs, so i'll stick with what works.
3D Prophet Radeon 9700 pro (my pride and joy)
creative Audigy player(and the sh~@*iest nicole £10 speakers)
Liteon 163D dvd rom
Liteon 24102b cdrw

Samsung Syncmaster 700ift 17" moniter
Hauppage firewire card
HP 5550 deskjet printer (awesome photo printer for just over £100)( price dropped to £58 a week after I bought it, considered buying another to put away until the first one died, I mean £58 for a good quality printer makes it almost disposable, by the time I'd hummed and harred for a week over it, it had obviously been a mistake and the price had been corrected, bummer)
