Converting MPeg to AVI?

Hello all,

I have recently gotten hold of a few films in mpg format (dont know whether it is mpeg-1 or 2) and would like to convert them to avi format.

Is this possible? If so what software do I use?

MPEG1 -> Virtual Dub
MPEG2 -> like DVD, frameserving through DVD2AVI etc

You can use Xmpeg, too. I think it just the easiest way (or Flaskmpeg).
Just open the mpeg, say which codec you want for video and audio and hit start.
