In subject I refer to Doom9's guides. Basically "GKnot" means that everything is done from GKnot GUI and "GKnot/VDub" means that GKnot makes all calculations and avisynth script and I do everything else in Virtual Dub (2-pass encoding, taking bitrate from GKnot). Are there any differences ? Let me explain what I'm asking about... As far as I know, with DivX 3.11a GKnot did some changes to .stats file and .ecf... Now with DivX 5 - does GKnot do any changes to .log .mv files that would make output .avi any different from what can be done "manually" with VDub ?

no - it's the same.

the only difference is that the later takes more time to set up.. and allows you to access every divx5 codec parameter.. thought with vdubconf you can achieve the same without having to resort to the manual way

another tool that automates is autodivx5. i have ripped 5 dvds with it and it is very simple to setup

Thanks. Don't know why I prefer doing it not from GKnot. Probably just got used to "manual" way and GKnot confuses me more than .avs and VDub combo. With Gknot I'm rechecking every setting twice and still not feel right when encoding starts. Like something still got away from my view.
