I guess the new AVD/EVD to DVD is just like SVCD to VCD if they can pull it off. I hope they don't put the stupid region code in it.
Man... $20 license fee for each DVD player. What a ripoff...

I guess it was robux4 who was posting a link on MCF mailing list a few weeks ago. I already sent an email to inform these people about MCF and XCD, maybe these people are searching for an alternative to VCD/S-VCD standard also, but got no reply ( as expected ).
The background behind AVD is basically that Chinese people want to have their own DVD standard because right now all DVDs on this market are illegal and Chinese government gets a lot of external pressure about this 'grey zone' mainly from the USA. But they definitely dont want to pay license fees to the owners of current DVD standard, being MPEG-LA again AFAIK.
This new format should not be underestimated. Chinese people are still happy with VCD, but once this huge market goes for quality there will be a high importance behind the format that will be used there, and AVD has good chances because Chinese authorities are behind it.

Plus Christian can play the disks he buys from there when he visits. If they make it outside China. Then again I doubt that would stop him. Hehe.
