I just want to ask 2 last questions about the Canopus MVR 1000. This card will capture from both analog and digital sources into MPEG2 that is ready to be taken directly into Spruceup without any further re encoding or work? Is this right? Also, how does this card compare to the DVStorm? thanks!

have you thought about the Navis Pro from Benclare ?

I have one (analog only) but its AWSOME and imports directly into spruce. It produces amazing results http://www.bernclare.com/navispro.htm

comes with tv tuner for US folks...

Here is a 6MPS demo you can view to gauge quality for yourself http://www.overlaytools.com/demo/navispro6Mbps.mpg

I guess the realtime encoders are using analog video (composit, Y/C, component).

MVR 1000 has only composit and Y/C (S-vhs) inn. But what is so good with this card is the noicereduction / filtering and the freedom to choose between several formats.

The encoded stream can be used in your authoring software without any further processing.

Are you saying I can't capture from my MiniDV camera with the MVR 1000? If so I would need the DV Storm?

You can capture from what ever you have if it has an analog video out connection. The firewire output is a 1:1 copy to the hd. Most of the cards has hardware accelerated mpeg encoding like DV500 from Pinnacle.

MVR1000 should be a very good card. I didn't test it but I'm looking for it and are almost 100% shoure it gonna be my next investment.

What if I only have firewire out from my camera?

Buy a firewire card. It gonna capture in DV using an editable avi format. After redigering you have to use a software encoder to encode.

Does the DVStorm capture direct to MPEG2 from either firewire (digital) or analog sources? If not I would save money by buying the MVR1000 and a seperate firewire card

The dvstorm on itself does not encode straight to mpeg2. But you can buy stormencoder (card which places itself on the dvstorm card), then you can encode realtime from any source on the dvstorm card, also from within stormedit (realtime) and adobe premiere (not realtime).
I own the dvstorm without mpeg2 module, i'm very happy with it. If you do not plan to edit much video's i'd go with the mvr100 and firewire. If you like editing, go with the dvstorm, you wont be dissapointed. I don't know however if i would recommend the mpeg2 module for it. I'm sure the quality is ok and it's a very productive combination, but i would lay my eyes also on the procoder (canopus), the mvr100 and ... cinecraft. I guess you have to decide if you want realtime mpeg2 from your input channels on the card or not. Keep in mind many software encoders are already more than realtime with todays cpu's (f.e. cinecraft). Maybe you could invest in a dual system instead of dvstorm...

What do you know about the Pinnacle DV1000 as far as capturing from any source directly to MPEG2? I don't plan to do any editing except for cutting and fading. I guess to sum it up I plan to capture from a lot of different sources (both analog and Digital) and don't want to be encoding video all the time to bring it into a DVD authoring app, and as far as editing just cutting and fading

I agree with jrdallas.

I have DVStorm with the MPEG encoder. I am very very happy with it.

Ask any questions you have about this pair.

Buy a second hand Pinnacle DV500 and use the latest driver and software from Pinnacle. It makes the card to a DV500 pluss. It has analog composit, Y/C and firewire in/out.

Has realtime effects in Premiere and a hardware accelerated mpeg2 encoding.

I gonna buy the MVR1000 because I have a anolog DPS nle system. It can take component video. After finished redigering I could just take a Y/C video from the card and encoded to a mpeg2 or mpeg1.
