View Full Version : New gknot guide problems

I was really excited about the new features of gknot and everything goes fine during the setup. The output file though is not at all near the projected file size. It's only around 350mb. At first I thought that it was encoding at the bitrate that was supposed to be for credits only so I selected no trim the second time. Same results. Anyone know why it is encoding at a really low bitrate? The bitrate calc says around 560 each time but the movie ends up looking like an Atari game.
thx for any help

Going to need more info.
What is your source?
What resolution did you use?
Did you run a comp check?
Did you use any filters?
What bitrate did you use?
What audio setting did you use?
Anything else of importance.

twinux: I moved your thread here as this forum deals with gknot issues. Please post to the correct form next time. Thanks.

followed the guide exactly. the only thing i didnt do was comp check because it seems to be optional and i never had to do it with the old version. BTW at no time does gknot ask me to enter a bitrate manually like i had to in the previous version. i assume thats because it calcs it automatically? anyway the source is Thirteen Days DVD which i ripped with smartripper that came with gknot package. i don't remember the bitrate but i made sure that i followed the following guidline from the guide, "It's not a good idea to go much below 0.17 bits/pixel*frame ."
sorry about posting in the wrong forum. i should have scrolled down the list to see all the categories.

could you post the gknot logfile please? it could help us determine what's wrong. ever since gknot got its own encoding features you cannot enter any bitrate anymore (dunno if you could before.. I haven't really been using gknot before).

i pasted the log file because i couldnt see my attachment. due to reading another post i found out that attachments must be verified by a moderator before they are shown. i apologize for taking up so much space in this thread.
thx

Try using a higher resolution. 416 x 224 is way to small in my opinion. It's possible this is why you get such a small filesize. I usually have a bits/(pixel * frames) at ~0.14 and I'm usuallly happy with the results.
To reach what Doom9 suggests in his guide just gives way too small resolution in my opinion.

your problem starts here:
2:08:10 PM: Trying to open Log-file.
2:08:11 PM: Error: Could not open C:\My Movies\Thirteen Days\thirteendays.log
2:08:11 PM: Error: Could not count encoded Frames.
2:08:11 PM: Speed: 0.000 Frames per Second. it's either that gknot still has a problem handling very large logfiles (had such a problem with spr but that should've been fixed a long time ago.. ). can you try to locate that logfile, tell us the exact size of it, open it in wordpad and paste the last 10 lines of the file?

im not getting a log file at all. the only two log files produced were the one i pasted and the AC3 to MP3 log file for besweet. when is this log file created in the process and do i have to personally name it?
Stats: C:\My Movies\Thirteen Days\thirteendays.stats
Im not getting a .stats file either.

could it be that checking the box, "delete intermediate files," on the codec setup screen will cause it to delete that log file when it is done with it?
epere4

I had the same error when I tried to use the old Gordian version with DivX5.
Could it be possible that now you are having the oposite problem? I mean, do you have DivX4 and you are trying to use Gordian 0.26?
If so, install DivX5.02.
I would make a complete reinstall of GordianKnot as it is Explained in Doom9īs guide (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm).
My explanation to this is that the format of DivX4 and DivX5 log files is diferent. And when one version of GordianKnot tries to open the file that correspond to the other versión of DivX, it canīt recognize it. So it tells you it canīt be opened.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Good Luck.

i only have divx5. it was my understanding that the new gknot was written with divx5 in mind. and it seems im getting that error message because the log file is no where to be found lol. im guessing something is going on with the first pass as that is where the log file is created right?
epere4
25th May 2002, 17:46
Donīt know, then.
Yes, it is the first pass where the log file is created.
Maybe it is like Doom9 says, and there is a bug with long movies, but I am not sure about that.
If I where you I would reinstall everething again, at least just to try something different. And also donīt mark "delete intermediate files" option to have all the files.
Good Luck.

how do i properly install gknot? it doesnt show up in add/remove programs and there is no uninstaller. do i just delete the folder? what registry settings were entered?
epere4
27th May 2002, 21:06
Gknot doesnīt have an uninstaller.
Simply overwrite the previous installation with a new one.
And donīt forget to reinstall also the DivX5.02 codec at the end.

btw reinstalling worked...thank you very much. hopefully i won't have to reinstall after every encode but that would be a small price to pay for the use of these amazing tools.
