Hello!
I will buy a DVD-R recored this week so I looked arround to find blank media to go with it. The best price in italy i've found so far is 8 euros ($7.5) for a verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB.
This is way to expensive for my shallow wallet. On this forum I discovered some on-line stores that offers no-branded media as low as 1.25$/piece! great price, specially for my pocket :)
Ok So I went on meritline.com to order some. The price for the DVDs 2x ML-DVDR-COMBO-001 is 2x $187=$374. BUT they tell me, that for shipment outside the US (for italy in my case) I need to pay $167.37 !!! extra. Of course I also need to pay the import duty 20% and now the total costs would be:
$374 DVD-Rs
+
20% Duty
---------------
$448,8
+
$167.37 Shipment
=================
$616,17 !!!
Divided by 200 its 3,08 each. This is alot. for an unbranded media. Gush I would like to live in america. The shipment there for this product is FREE!!!
So can any1 tell me how and where can I purchase DVD-R blank media for $2 or less??? PLEASE?

This is what they have to say ...
INTERNATIONAL ORDERS - We only ship from this on-line order system to customers in North America. International orders from other continents must contact our bulk sales desk by fax 1+ 203-744-8444. There is a minimum order to these continents of 1,000 discs. Payment must be made by wire transfer or credit card prior to the shipment of the media. All international (non-U.S.) customers are responsible for the payment of all import customs duties levied by their own governement. These duties are typically collected at the time you receive your shipment.
so thanks, but no thanks

How about www.thepriceiswrite.co.uk This is an England based company who is selling Vivastar unbranded DVD-R Media for £0.85.
I am not sure what shipping would be, but you should be able to get 17.5% VAT off this price as you are in Italy.
Worth having a look at least - It is by far the cheapest media available in th UK
:D ;) :D

Any news?
Is there any unbranded media in europe?
I got new price for verbatim blanks for about 5 euros.
erwan
27th May 2002, 08:43
i live in france.
this what shop4tech says :
The total for shipping 25 DVD-R to your location is $88.00 (total price).

They havent answered yet (its about a week!)
so only the shipment for the france is $88 for 25 DVDs? hm this is toooooo mutch
if the price is for both - DVDs and shipment The price is still too high as I todl I get verbatim DVDs for less than 5 euros
erwan
27th May 2002, 09:47
yes the price includes 25 dvd-r's + shipping.
the unit price is then (including shipping) 3.52 $ (so about 3.5 euros as well).
that's more than half the price compared to applestore but i dunno the quality of these shop4tech dvd-r's.
apple's ones are just perfect.
applestore.com (choose your location on the bottom of the screen)
5 unit = 29 euros
+ 10 euros for shipping
+7.64 (f......) taxes.
so for 10 dvd-r's, we got = 29*2 +10 +7.64*2 = 81.33.
the unit price is then (including shipping) 8.33 euros (so about 8.5 euros as well)
if anyone knows better deals in europe (including shipping),
let us know !

yes that DVD from shop4tech are no branded that means the quality cant be good. Some DVD players wont even read purple no branded media
bujt if the cost for one is $2 or less than it's worthit but not for more. Branded ones in the other hand they guarantee you compatibility and I can assure you the quality is lot better so If I have to choose from 3,5 euros (no branded) and 4.5 euros branded I'll go for branded!
But let me know too for better deals!
erwan

i aggree with you !
so now we have to find 4.5 euros branded media (including shipping) in europe.

Hi , I can supply dvd-r's for £1.25 GBP a piece (min order of 25)
(that works out at about 2 euro's a peice , plus shipping.
I should have a new batch arriving at the end of this week
when I can test them on a standalone player .(these are
unbranded, but previous batches of slightly more expensive
ones have worked fine)
I have not advertised my email address , as I am not sure that
it is the done thing to advertise in here .
but if they work , I can always set up a private ebay auction for you
(I have a very good feedback rating), and could except payment via
paypal.

I forgot to confirm that I am based in the UK , you probably
guesed that from the £ GBP pricing . But I dont believe the
shipping to Italy is that much (I will check it out)and
as we are both in the EU there would be no risk of any
import duty due as you would have paid the UK rate (included
in the price quoted)

Hi guys,
I order a bunch of DVD's at cdrecordable.. maybe i good a good shipment, but they all went fine.. i burnt about 29 of them and they all work fine on my Sony dav-s500, however i heard bad stories about them.
I had to pay: €107.65 for 30 but they were held at customs and had to pay tax so it came at €129.18 for 30 = €4.03 a piece
i heard good stories about shop4tech dvd's (at vcdhelp.com) but i haven't tried them yet.
so i'm still interested in other discs in europe, maybe i'll try shop4tech

Hello
Same boot as your , i'm living in denmark and the prices is way
out here. :(
We also had to pay about 1.5 euro in taxes for a DVD-R media so
the price here for the cheapest is about 6-6.5 euro...
I had order from http://www.lynxdv.com/estore/ the ship to most
destinations in europe.
Try http://www.cdr-by-mail.co.uk they should also ship to the
most countries in europe...
www.blankdiscshop.co.uk doesn't ship outside UK.....
I paid about 50 £ for 25 DVD-R and 3 DVD-RW including freight to
denmark not bad at all....
Best Regards

Well, you got a better deal than I (£58 for 25 DVD-Rs). But it's cheap enough ... less than half price in sweden, freight and VAT included. So thanks for the link. I've allready ordered :)
I'm also very interested in the DVD technology or rather what goody new stuff can do, how much it'll cost and when it's due out. So I've been looking around for any information about the Dual layered (DVD-9) drives/discs for burning for a while, but alas ... there is none, information that is. Then I stumbled upon this small FAQ at the web-shop you tipped about and here's what they have to say about it.
• So can I make a dual layer disc?
Well, yes if you've got enough money you can, but expect to pay several thousand pounds just for one copy! - a dual layer disc is "pressed", this means it has two layers stuck together with glue (yes it sounds crude, it is, have a look at one), these two layers are written at different frequencies, which means the laser in a DVD can read both layers as if it was one. Dual layer discs, because they are stuck together, will never be a consumer format.
What do you think guys. Does the man seem to know what he's talking about? Should I not hold my breath for single sided discs that can hold any movie?
Cheers

Hi,
I live in Italy and have just purchased from
www.meritline.com:
MERITLINE DVD pack x 25 at 1.59$ each total 39.75$
then:
25 pack = 39.75$
shippins fee = 34.33$
plus iva 20%
no duty
TOTAL = 81.87euros ---->3.3 euro each.
They are unbranded but in Italy is impossible to
find a cheaper dvd.
Tomorrow they arrive and I'll try them, so I'll post
my experience about this media.
bye

OK, I've received the media from Meritline.
This media seems to be good, even if unbranded.
My Pioneer A04 burns them a 1x.
I've burned 2 movies (JP3 and Swordfish) to backup
my original, with Nero 5.5.8.2 without problems.
They play very well on my standalone. (Magnex DVP900)
