View Full Version : Tip: Put your "flipper" disc on one side...

EDIT: I originally posted this tip last year after only being "in the game" for about a month. There is a much better way of doing this particular thing now and it is by placing the two video clips back to back on the timeline in Maestro and creating a sync audio track by assigning audio to each. You can find more information on this in my "TiVo to DVDR" guide on my site http://dvdguides.trilight.net

Ok, I just got finished working with a "flipper" disc and was annoyed with the fact that the movie was in two parts. Aside from the obvious solution of doing a bunch of video editing, I came up with another idea. The title was "GoodFellas". The first thing I was concerned with was whether my audio would line up correctly. Since each AC3 file was timecoded to correspond with each given side, I did not want to try splicing the whole thing into one. I'm assuming you already understand the techniques on this site so I'm not going to go into detail.

I authored my project in DVD Maestro. I set the first side as one movie and the other side as a second movie. (Let's call them "SideA" and "SideB") I set the end action of the last chapter (19 in this case) to go to the first chapter of the SideB movie. This effectively allowed the movie to continue with the second title without any intervention from the user. While this works ok, it made it incredibly annoying when trying to navigate. When you got to chapter 19 on SideA, you were not able to skip forward to SideB and, likewise, were unable to skip back when already on SideB.

Now here's where it gets tricky so pay attention! :) What I did was create a "Chapter 20" on the SideA movie and a "Chapter 0" on the SideB movie. You cannot put chapters any closer together in Maestro than 15 frames apart. This worked fine in this case. "Chapter 20" is at the very end of SideA. "Chapter 0" is at the very beginning of SideB with "Chapter 1" being only 15 frames in from there. The trick is to set the "End Action" of Chapter 20 on SideA to go straight to "Chapter 1" on SideB. You set the "End Action" of "Chapter 0" on SideB to go to "Chapter 19" of SideA.

If you're still with me, you see what I did. For all intents and purposes, "Chapter 20" of SideA and "Chapter 0" of SideB are "dummy chapters". They are there mainly to serve the purpose of navigation. With things set up this way, I am able to skip forward while on SideA until I hit "Chapter 20" which automatically brings me to the beginning of SideB. Conversely, I am able to skip backwards to "Chapter 0" on SideB and it brings me to the last "watchable" chapter of SideA which is Chapter 19.

Just thought this was a helpful tip for anyone annoyed like I was with the "flipper" disc problem.

Why don't you join both sides of the DVD?(http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/joinclip.html#joindbl)
The rest (encoding, authoring) is as usual.
I did the same movie this way and it worked very well.

Interesting. I've not tried something like that. What sort of editing of the IFO files is necessary to accommodate such a change? Do the chapter selections in the menu and overall "forward and backward" navigation work as they should on the final disc?
