Ok, I'm trying to figure out what in the world this movie really is. Checking the VTS_01_1.VOB file, I get:

Field Top First:Yes
Quantscale:Nonlinear
Scan Type:Alternate
Frame Type:Interlaced

VTS_01_2.VOB and VTS_01_3.VOB both show...

Field Top First:No
Quantscale:Nonlinear
Scan Type:ZigZag
Frame Type:Progressive

VTS_01_4.VOB and VTS_01_5.VOB both show...

Field Top First:Yes
Quantscale:Nonlinear
Scan Type:ZigZag
Frame Type:Progressive

And, finally, VTS_01_06.VOB shows...

Field Top First:No
Quantscale:Nonlinear
Scan Type:ZigZag
Frame Type:Progressive

How the hell do I know what it really is? When I load it up and view it in DVD2AVI, it's all part of one ID. There is no extra crap thrown in to muck up the process. It's all just the movie. I've never seen anything so different like this. Why is it this way and what can I do to determine what settings to use?

The movie is almost certainly:
Quantscale:Nonlinear
Scan Type:ZigZag
Frame Type:Progressive

I suspect that after running DVD2AVI on this, the NTSC reading will be 5% or less (assuming we are talking R1 here)

I routinely rip a movie using Streamtipper to prduce video and audio as 2 streams, but then rip about 5 sec of one of the higher vob's (not VTS_xx_1) so that I can see the true settings for Quantscale, Scan Type and Frame Type. I run BV on this 5 sec piece before I do the setings in CCE.

The "field top" issue is puzzling here, but since you cant change field order in CCE, I just go ahead and encode. Have had no noticeable problem on over 100 R1 movies. I have seen some long threeads on this field top issue but seems not to make a difference in PC DVD player or my set top box

Can you change field order (without ill effect) during the process from DVD to CCE, if so how?

Thanks for the input. I'm trying it out using "Upper Field First" with the obvious settings that show the same for the rest. As for changing field order when frameserving to CCE, you can set it as part of your Avisynth script though processing will take slightly longer.

For anyone interested, the settings I used turned out fine even though there was different information reported by Bitrate Viewer. Go figure.
