I have a question about the aspect ratio of movies. I have just copied The Man Who Wasn't There. It is a 4:3 film so in GKnot is set input pixel aspect ratio to 4:3. The trouble is the movie looks stretched vertically.

Also 16:9 movies can be 1:1.85 or 1:2.35 (or something). There is no option in GKnot to set this. Does it select the correct aspect ratio automatically? If it doesn't surely some movies will appear squashed or stretched?

Is there somthing i am missing, please enlighten me!

While looking at the preview, use the menu and make sure that resize is selected. This will show you what your output will look like.

Yeah, i do the 'view resized' bit. It is the final movie that looks stretched.

I think i had this same issue with 'Primal Fear'. Movie information showed 16:9 but it was stretched horizontally when I finished the movie. However, if I set it to 4:3 it worked perfectly. Did you try changing to 16:9 and seeing how it comes out?

What you can try to do then is set the preview to resize and stay on top. Then make sure that autocrop all is selected. Then if the output doesn't look right, alternately select 4:3 and 16:9 input to see which looks right. Some dvds aren't labeled correct. Gnot should select the right aspect.

I will give that a try. It will have to be with something else, i have already deleted the vobs from the DVD.

Going back to the 1:1.85 / 1:2.35 question, even though you just select 16:9 will GK know the difference?

if i understand everything correctly(which i'm not sure if i do) and you select 16:9 it will do 2.35. If you select 4:3 it will do 1.85

So if you select 16:9 for 1:2.35 and 4:3 for 1:1.85, what do you use when the movie is full screen, as in not wide screen?

Mac is correct. You cannot rely on DVD's label for the aspect ratio. GKnot cannot detect it also automatically, you have to set it manually according to DVD2AVI statistic report.

AFAIK, GKnot handles aspect ratio based on pixel aspect ratio after cropping. That's when you have 16:9 NTSC, crop width to crop height ratio is multiplied by 1.212 and when it's 4:3 multiplied by 0.909.
