On2 did a very slanted comparrison to Divx. But there has yet to be a thurough test.

...I'm also looking forward for an onjective comparison, ON2 has his own bu$ine$$ to run and new plugins to rv9 to sell (vp5), and rv9 itself, without vp4/5 plugins, might be embarassing him atm.
Doom, do you plan to have some testruns with the rv9 codec in the next few weeks?
thanks in advance for your kind response.

Who knows... noone besides those who have tried RP9 take RV9 serious.
The samples including the 750k and 1M download RV9 samples on RealNetworks.com are not "golden examples" and are not as someone said "optimized in 10 passes".

I agree with you, I "optimize in 2 passes" and get the same stunning quality, and I have always been able to fit 1 movie on 1 cd without too many sacrifices.
The outcome is totally adherent to my expectations, often better than my DivX5.x rips, but.... there are still other friends at this Forum who prefer to fiddle with betas/unstable code, and lift eyebrows in gettin' a try at a Vendor's preview.
I understand their concerns on openness of the codec (but, tell me truly - how often did you re-encode an already-converted movie?), but I have my concerns on my quality vs. time spent, and RV9 sits at the top of my codecs' list.
It'll be nice to read your opinions, if you feel this subject is worth.
take care

well.. codec comparisons take a lot of (unpaid) time so you can figure that I'm not too keen on doing it every month but your request has been noted.. I'll see what I can do. also note that comparisons are no fun but many hours of hard work..

there are still other friends at this Forum who prefer to fiddle with betas/unstable code, and lift eyebrows in gettin' a try at a Vendor's preview. Yea, I guess I should just shut up and let RV9 shine. If it's as good as I say it is: The cream should rise to the top, right?
I understand their concerns on openness of the codec (but, tell me truly - how often did you re-encode an already-converted movie?)Personally myself, it is pretty rare that I ever get around to actually completing a single dvd (i encode jap anime) :) And on the occasion that I actually do get a whole single dvd done the video usually comes out "flawed" in one way or another... i.e. Subtitles being out of sync and de-interlacing and IVTC problems.
But I have managed to get two "rips" successfully done. Cardcaptor Sakura DVD 1 and Hand Maid May DVD 1. Even these those were with default audience definitions and could be made better / smaller with my new custom audience definition... But they are *done*. The picture is sharp with no artifacting and besides some interlacing showing while the end credits roll up, I am not redoing them. :)
but I have my concerns on my quality vs. time spent, and RV9 sits at the top of my codecs' list. I tried divx5.00 regular on my cartoons and got aweful mosquito noise on text and line edges till i used like 2.5M bitrate (and size then became a problem). Real on the other hand only starts to show the same stuff/artifacting till I droped the bitrate to 500k and was almost gone at 750k (one 1M is golden for me /w a few tweaks).
bleh, enough yaking from me for one post :) I'm sure my bitching is getting old and repetitive...
