Hi t1955feb,
I'm sorry to say but I don't like those "???..." and this unfriendly icon at all - this is a forum that will not tolerate this tone and you subscribed to the forum rules - therfore I have to give you a strike for that (rule 9) second sentence applies) - So please calm down and do your posts like anybody else does in here.
Some experienced members who might be able to help you will not tolerate this either and so they often decide to not answer such posts. So please read and stick to the rules for your future posts. ;)
But now to your problem:
I'm not on Windows XP but I think you should re-install the latest VIA drivers if you have a VIA based mainboard - but it's just a guess.
Greetings,
Gerti

I use windows xp pro myself and if i update or not xp the sound ripping and encoding runs the same speed, tho i don thave a via motherboard i'm using dual sis boards ect. So i reall dont have an answer for you other then xp works fast for me compared to others that run the same type of system.

Hmm,
I had just a second thought on that and I believe the DMA transfer option must be disabled if your drive's transfer speed is so slow. So you might want to check if the DMA transfer option is enabled for your drives.
With Win2k you can set the transfer mode within the system applet's device manager but I don't know if this applies to XP also.

That's weird - the first I'm hearing that this feature had an impact on the transfer speed - but also I think: you can never know nowadays - hardware related issues seem to get worse. ;)
Thanx for reporting back,
Gerti
