I just reformatted, Win2k with all the updates. Installed WinDVD2000r, DVDs won't play, it says Create Overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again. It's at 16-bit, 800x600, plus it worked before the reformat, so I go down to 256, 640x480 and get the same error. I tried with PowerDVD3 and get a similar error. Tried with the new trial version of WinDVD and same error.
Now, as happy as I am converting DVD's to DivX, then watching them....I'd like to be able to watch the DVD as well. It seems I need to enable overlay? How? Anyone have any tips for me? Thanks in advance.

well, like I said I have all the updates, including SP2 and IE6(released yesterday). I have some crappy graphics card, but never had to install drivers before(windows always did it for me) and the thing is, this exact setup worked before I reformatted.

so the only difference is IE6? But this shouldn´t produce this errors. I would try the latest videocard driver you can get and choose 16bit color depth!

Already done(video drivers, 16-bit), and it also didn't work before I upgraded to IE6.
edit: still having this problem guys...anyone have any clue what I should do? As much fun as I'm having converting everything to DivX4 before watching, I'd like to fix this.

Just wanted to add this in case anyone was listening in the first place:
ok, so I installed WindowsXP build 2600, and now I can play DVD's....eerie, still can't play them in windows 2000. But now I have the problem that the DivX4 codec doesn't seem to like WinXP (yet), oh well, I can play DVD's, I should be happy.
