Encoded using DivX 5.0.1 show a dark band down the right edge of the screen - a number of people have reported this bug (see thread DivX5.01 bug?
I tried DivX Pro 5.0.1 once but also got this dark band. DivX Pro 5.0 encodes don't show this artifact.
Doom9 asserts that the decoder for DivX 5.0 DivXPro 5.0 and DivX 5.0.1 are the same, but some people report that DivX 5.0.1 encodes played back using other decoders like ffdshow are OK.
So is the dark band encoded into the AVI or is it something to do with the playback decoding?
Am reluctant to upgrade to 5.0.1 until this issue is resolved. But then I might be missing out some improvements and also, 5.0 can't playback 5.0.1 encodes.
comments please

When did he do that ?
I'am 99% sure that this is a decoder problem.
This is stated very clearly in the known bugs list at divx.com

See Doom9's post (7th from the top) in the DivX 5.01 Bug? thread: "if you have a look at the decoder property you'll see that it's all divx pro.. the decoder isn't any different in any of the 3 versions as far as I know (we can compare filesize and date if you want.. I have the registered pro edition - legally registered even but I got it for free "

DivX 5.0 has a LOT of issues, so many that I wouldn't advise anyone to use it. In DivX 5.01 they have fixed a lot of these issues though, so by all means get rid of the 5.0 version, even if your particular problem hasn't been solved.

Replace the "divxdec.ax" file with the old 5.0 version.
You can find it here (divx5dec.zip) (http://es.geocities.com/divx2001es/programas).

That might get rid of the dark band but won't it also disable playback of any DivX5.0.1 video? (the latter won't playback under DivX5.0)

@JB: I think Doom9 was referring to the three versions of divx5.0.1 (standard, pro, gain).
Anyway you have already confirmed that the playback filter in divx5.0 and divx5.0.1 are different.
