View Full Version : Longevity of different brands of DVD-R?

I was wondering if anyone knew how chemically stable the dyes are in differnet brands of DVD-R. DVD-Rs do not use the same dyes as CDRs, so there is no reason to assume that the two types of media have comparable lifespans. I'm guessing most DVD-Rs sold today were not even on the market five years ago, and it's anyone's guess how long they really last.

I was thinking of doing some testing myself. I plan on comparing the ability of Meritline, TDK and Mitsui DVD-Rs to withstand excessive heat, humidity and sunlight. The brand that remains playable after the most abuse is probably the best bet for archiving video. If anyone has any pointers for designing a longevity test for DVD-Rs I would be glad to hear them.
