My cd-rw stopped burning, it had problems before but nothing like this. It's a 4x4x24 hi-val drive, i bought it a while back. Recently, it burns to 100% but when it says "processing lead-out", and similar things (i.e. finalizing..) it just stops right there. I am not sure where the problem is, I re-installed windows 98, used many different burning software(Nero, DJ, etc. All newest versions.), even updated aspi from adaptec site (4.70 now) but i still get the same thing.
Problems before these were that it could only write at 4x, no more no less, but that didn't bother me much.
Any help is -greatly- appriciated.

Asssuming there isn't much dust accumalate inside the writer, if this problem persists even if burning 650MB CD, the write head is probably at the end of it's life.

I get a problem like this. I can burn a 650mb CDr fine... even a 700mb CDr but when the data is over about 680mb on the 700CDr it won't close off the CD. However when I burn a 700mb of data and it's no longer readable it still actually burns it. I'll show you what I mean:
With all my non-working 700 CDr I'll put them in my newer burner and just close the session without burning addtional data. and the original data I put on there with my 4x2x24x is there working fine. So basicall all my non-working 700mb CDrs are just fine. Just not closed off though.

From the write speed of your HP writer you mentioned, it looks like a Philips mechanism. It's probably dying. Those early Philips drives really sucks.

few suggestions,
1) try slower burn speed
2) try different burning software
3) make sure nothing is running in the background , and that you're screensaver isn't coming up just as the lead out is starting or something
4) try different media
if none of that helps, buy a new one.

I was burnt by those early Sony writer....:( To be more specific, a 2x writer, Sony OEM for Apple. No DAO, no support for 700mb disc, and pricey! Overburn? You must be kidding cos' it was the darkage of consumer cd authoring on Mac. And you need to use a stinking caddy....ahh, those were the days....:)

The only other media I have at hand is cdrw, I think. I did try many burning programs as well. So ...with nero I was able to burn an image successfully. But with fireburner I cant, it wont do it, even in test mode, it wont close off. You press cancel and nothing, Gotta ctr-alt-del it. Very weird, and like I mentioned before I cant change the speed :-/ Another question, I installed adaptac 4.7 (but it says its 4.6) either way I heard it sucked. So how do I uninstall my aspi layers and re-install a different one? BTW, which should I install if I can uninstall my currect one? It maybe confusing, but please help me!! It screwed up again...
PS, i dont think its the media because it worked before, but stopped after I tried overburning..

Nero uses its own aspi driver resided in the same dir as the nero binary and does not use adaptec aspi driver, or any aspi dll inside your systemdir. And regarding fireburner, as long as the version you are using is 2.1.4 or later, it does not require aspi driver at all. Is your writer only capable of TAO?

No, it does DAO, but lately its been WEIRD. Not just this but a whole bunch of this (like my pc wont shut down, only restart so i gotta use the "power" button) today it seems like I wrote a cd with ezcd pro '95 and yesterday fireburner lead out, but it said there was an error...but today there was no error nor did it lead out. (I wasted so many cds :( ...) On a different topic, anyone have a RAW2ISO converter?
