View Full Version : How do I "avoid freeze frames"

I am recording TV programs using my capture card, then converting them to DivX 3, using GordianKnot for resizing, DVD2Avi for frameserving and demuxing, and Nandub SBC for encoding. I often get "freeze frames". I have tried going to "Full Processing Mode" instead of "Fast Recompress" and activating Nandub's "Encoding Errors Prevention and Quality Control". I have set it to Full and Antishit=) to 16 and Min Quality to 30. I have left the Motion Modulation to 0. This often helps, but the final avi is also often much larger in file size than one encoded without invoking "Encoding Errors Prevention and Quality Control". I admit I don't quite understand how these settings influences the overall quality of the finished video. :-)

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Is there a general setting for Antishit=), Min Quality and Motion Modulation I can/should use?

Can someone please explain the Motion Modulation setting? I have read Doom9's information and also "Nandub Options Explained", but I guess I am thick, because I still don't get it. :-)

Should I instead create an .ecf file and insert keyframes where there are freeze frames?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi-

Try Anti-Shit at 16, and Min. Qual. at 1. If you still get freeze frames, then boost Anti-shit to 20 or so. Leave Mot. Mod. at 0.

Manono, the setting you suggested works like a charm. I no longer get freeze frames in the videos I've captured via my TV-card and encode to DivX 3. The only negative thing is that it takes longer to encode in Full Processing Mode than Fast Recompress. But it's worth it. Thank you so much!

Hi-

Glad it worked for you. If you want your speed back, you might try XviD or DivX5. Then you can use Fast Recompress and not have to worry about freeze frames.

Again, thanks Manono. You've saved me a lot of grief. I tore my hair before you replied. ;-)

So, the freeze frame problem does not exist in DivX 5 and Xvid?
Hmmm.. :-)
When the playback audio/video sync problem with jumping in a DivX 5 video has been solved, and I get the same smooth motion (and picture sharpness) as with SBC DivX 3.11 alpha, I will change to DivX 5. ;-)

XVid sounds interesting. Where can I read more about it?
Is it open source?
Wasn't there a problem with playing Xvid's after installing DivX 5?

Sorry for asking about finding Xvid. Doom9 even has a guide for it. I apologize.
