I'm using Divx 5.0.1 Pro, and every now and then I get a 'Protection Error' when working with Divx AVIs. Anything from clicking on the AVI in explorer to choosing a codec in VirtualDub to playback causes the error.

5.0 worked fine...Re-installing doesn't help. I also formatted about a week ago and it still does it.

You are probably trying to encode already encoded divx3,4 avis aren't you? Well, it is a very hard thing to do and it is impossible to get better than the original resultseven at the 5:4 file sizes.

And maybe you are not. Then please give some specific details.;)

What does reencoding DivX movies has to do with his problem?

Errr what? I second that exactly...What does that have to do with my problem?

Here are several scenarios...

1. Open up VirtualDub. Load my avisynth script. Hit Ctrl-C to choose codec. "Protection Error. Error 15." VDub closes.

2. Uninstall Divx5....everything works fine. Reinstall...same problem

3. Divx5 installation program. Everything works fine, gets to the end...Press OK to exit. Error 15. Protection error.

4. View a directory/drive/whatever in explorer. Click on a divx-
encoded file. Protection error. Explorer crashes/closes.

Would you like any more? heh.

I thought it might be adware related, so I left all the registry entries there and blocked gain trickler...same thing.

Are you using Divx 5.01?

I had a relatively similar prob, I got "Error -2 wrong input format" all the time, so I'm using 5.0 again and it works.

Well, probably it's not related (doesn't really seem to be...)

Yeah, 5.0 works fine...:(

jonny told me in another thread that some errors can occur when there are presets in VDub that you made with Divx 5.0 and you are using them with Divx 5.01
He told me to restore codec defaults, but I can't try it anymore because I'm just about to set up a new system and I deleted everything. I hope Divx 5.01 will work flawlessly on a fresh install.
