View Full Version : Mutliple outputs : redoing first pass necessary?

I output some tv recordings to different bitrates, all of them VBR 2 pass (say 600, 800, and 1200), and I am wondering if it is necessary to run the first pass at each of these bitrates, or if the first pass is bitrate-independent. Can someone clear this up for me?

The first pass is not bitraite-independant. You can change the bitrate on the second pass, but you won't reach the best possible results. Personally I wouldn't change the bitrate on the second pass more than ~15%, but that's just me. Some say higher.

So I wouldn't recommend using the same log file if you really want that little extra, if you don't care about that, go ahead and use it. Remember, this is just my personal opinion.

one additional thing to consider: the psy settings must be the same for both passes.. if you change them you get horrible results

Still using 5.0, I havn't been convinced that 5.0.1 works correctly (I get shitframes even if I don't use Psy), so that shouldnt be a problem
