Is there a difference between the pioneer dvr-104 and the a04. www.esbuy.com has the dvr-104 cheaper than the a04 model. But the features look the same. Some people with the dvr-104 on forums have said that they have had lucked burning the generic cdrecordables dvdr-s at 2x with the dvdr-104. Which one should i get?

From my understanding, the DVR-104 is just the OEM version of the A04. So basically you get the drive and that's it, no drivers, bundled software or anything. Which from what I've read of MyDVD which is the bundled DVD authoring software with the A04, is no great loss anyway.

I have the A04.

The A04 is just the external retail package name... The drive that comes with the A04 IS the DVR-104 drive..

In fact if you go into the device manager or BIOS, you will find the the drive that came in the A04 package is labeled as the DVR-104.

Only difference, is the fact that the DVR-104 is an OEM model.. so you have to deal with not having the Pioneer label on the face of the tray... Big deal.. I think you even get the software that comes with the retail version. MYDVD is pointless in my opinion.. and the most valuable software is Veritas RecordNow DX... which I think comes with the OEM package... and so does CyberLink PowerDVD 4 XP.

I made a mistake spending so much more for the A04.. I would get the DVR-104 if I were you.

Hyper Micro (http://www.hypermicro.com) has it for $339. When I bought it from them a month or so ago, it was $365! They are very reasonable on shipping and very easy to get on the phone if you have questions. I've bought things from them for years as they have always been the cheapest and easiest to deal with.
