View Full Version : How to get rid of high motion scenes blocks

I'v noticed that everytime an high motion scene kicks in, the codec gives not enought bits and I end up notice the blocks. Its strange as I put 2 as min and max quantizer forcing the codec to use it, and giving, in some movies, a very hight bitrate like 1800. I understand that Data Rate Control parameters could be the answer, but apparently, I cant find values to solve the problem. Now if anyone could help me

when you set both quantizers on 2, the bitrate is ignored, you can put 0 or 10000kbps, this won't change the size.
Setting both quantizers to 2 is equivalent to quality based 100%, this is the maximum quality you can get with the codec.
If you're not happy, forget DivX and watch the DVD!

the best with quantizers on 2? isn't it possible to set it on 1?

NO! at least not in DivX 5.x

so... am I right if I say that with the standard values (2/12) for quantizers, the bitrate only is usefull for high motion scenes?
because it seems more logical to me if it was something like 7/7 because or even 12/2 because highmotion is more important
does that make sense?

@ daniel
I havn't really understood what you mean, but I'll answer anyway:
If you're going to encode in bitrate mode, you HAVE TO set a higher max quantizer. Now, the lower the max quantizer the better the overall quality. I would recommend 8 or 7 for max quantizer. Going lower than 7 may cause too big files (it sure depends on the movie, the resolution & the bitrate you selected). Going over 8 will reduce the quality anyway. Don't ever change the min quantizer, 2 is a perfect choice.
I don't really know which quantizers will be used on high motion scenes, but this doesn't matter, since it's DivX that decides which quantizer may be used on that or that scene.

okay thanks, I will test with these quantizer values
