View Full Version : Crashing during encoding

OK, so this probably could and should go under the TMPG forum. But who are we kidding, nobody actually reads that forum. :) The problem is that after I setup DVD2SVCD and it goes through DVD2AVI and BeSweet, and gets to TMPGEnc (i'm using TMPGEnc plus 2.53), it goes to about 12% or so and then it gets an error like "invalid write state." I'll run it again tonight and post the exact error message when I have a chance, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything. Is TMPG less reliable/stable than CCE? My CPU is an Athlon XP 1800+ on a Soyo Dragon+ with 512 MB of RAM, so I should *think* that I'm meeting all the system requirements. :)

I've done "eleventy billion" or so Divx rips (give or take "threve"), but this is my first adventure into SVCD. I've read all the guides and FAQs and searched the forums for TMPG crash before posting... Thanks for any tips, suggestions, whatever, even ones that come with the "i'm not sure if this will work, but..." disclaimer.

The DVD is X-Files S1, Disc 3, Region 1. Already ripped using smatripper, and this is just the first episode on there. Since I already divx ripped it, I know it's hybrid NTSC/FILM with some interlacing artifacting. Everyone's favorite, I know.

I've been reading the CCE crash post that's like 3 novels long and gotten some good ideas from that (update AVISynth, mpeg2dec, etc.) and will be trying those too. Will let you know if I solve my own problem, so maybe other n00bs won't ask. :)

OK, sorry this took so long to get back to--we've been having transient power failures all week long making it very hard to do long projects.

After updating VIA drivers and tweaking some settings in my BIOS to be more stable, and grabbing AVISynth 1.0 beta 7d and using the mpeg2dec2.dll, I finally made some progress... I thought.

TMPGEnc crashed at 99% done with a Stream Reading Error, and the preview window shows an AVISynth access violation.

So close, and yet so far... any more ideas?

Thanks.

Have you fully tested your machine with Prime95 and Memtest 86?
Both are linked in the Q + A. Even if you know the machine is 100% it's a good thing to do to be able to completely elimate hardware as a possible cause.

I have not used TMPG for some time so I can only offer basic trouble shooting tips.

This may not have been the best place since the breakdown here seems to be around %70 CCE %30 TMPG if not more for CCE. Give it a shot and if nobody can help you give the guys in the TMPG forum a shout.

I just wanna point out the fact that u did not use DVD2SVCD 2 rip the DVD.

The fact that u used smartripper to do the DVD-rip could be the problem. Try using DVD2SVCD 2 both rip and convert 2 SVCD and it might work.

@InfoCynic You should always use the internal routines or vstrip. Only if those 2 fail, would you then use smartripper. If you follow that rule of thumb you will find that you can backup just about anything.
