More passes = more quality :D, but I doubt you will see much difference beyond the three passes.

@fox mulder

"More passes = more quality" ..

Not always - If you get the bit rate above 2300 or so you can use CBR rather than multipass VBR and the results on screen look about the same .. I agree that low bit rates need VBR - but more passes don't ALWAYS mean more quality - In CBR there is only ONE pass ...

ALWAYS? where did I said ALWAYS? And yes, you're right.
Besides I was talking about VBR and I don't think that people uses CBR for SVCD for example.

ok, but what is the point?
once you did the 1st pass and scanned the movie
why do you need another pass before the final encode?

I guess the motion estimation gets better in each pass or something.

dont understand how.

Basically, multiple passes helps because there are many, many variables encoding in mpeg. Doing multiple passes lets CCE fine tune on things like motion vectors and bit allocation among macroblocks to achieve optimal quality.

CCE could probably fine tune with multipass vaf, then save the final result in one pass. *But* since CCE probably has to encode the GOPs to determin where things *aren't* optimal, it doesn't take any more time to just save the mpv as it goes, so that's the way they coded it.
