View Full Version : Enabling DMA crashes computer.

I recently set my hardrives up for DMA. This significantly increased my ripping speeds and overall transfer speed. I then enabled my DVD drive to DMA as Ive heard this greatly increases rip speeds. I currently rip at 2.3x with smartripper (before setting HD to DMA, was ripping at 1x). So, after enabled DMA on my drive, when I run Smartfipper, it locks up my computer when I try to rip a movie.

I can play movies just fine in various programs, and can rip through internal procedures using DVD2SVCD. If I shut off DMA and reboot, Smartripper works as it should.

Here is what Ive tried.

1. reinstalled smartripper
2. complete defrag/scandisk
3. reinstalled all drivers for HD
4. rolled back registry and tried process again
5. searched for firmware or topics regarding Samsung DVD drives
6. contacted vendor and dell to no avail
7. swore frantically at box for irritating me so!

The Drive model is Samsung SD-612B and according to Samsung, supports DMA.

So, is this drive just crap for ripping or is their something I can do in the bios or a type of a tweak to gain the rewards of increased ripping speeds with this drive?

Or, option B: Purchase a new drive that will allow me to rip faster and if so, what brand and model number of drive do you reccomend?

Thanks in advance. The Thumper.

It's unlikely, but install Force Aspi from the Doom9 download page. There is a chance it's a driver issue.

You might want to play around with your IDE-Setup. That is, attach your DVD to the same / a different IDE-channel than that of your harddisk (there are some chipsets around, namely from VIA, with nasty bugs that can sometime be circumvented this way).

Get and install the latest chipset / IDE drivers.

Flash an up-to-date BIOS for your motherboard.

If you are using Win95/98/ME consider switching to NT4/W2K.

Hope that helps...

Heh. I have that drive as well.

I used to have it on an ALi-based motherboard, and the performance was terrible. The only way I could get DMA to enable properly was to change the IDE miniport driver for the motherboard.

So it would be helpful if you could post your hardware configuration.
