maybe it is that simple, but i could not figure it out ..
how can you analyze a mpeg stream and see whether it is mpeg1 (vcd) or mpeg2 (svcd) for burning them to a cd.
any tool/prog/built in solution ?
comments are welcome

Weel...
VCDEasy can analyze the videos that you feed it to make an image with, it will usually tell you if you have the wrong type of file for whatever you're creating.
Or you could use this program (http://www.medialab.se/mpgprop_e.html)
Its a small prog that gives you the properties of the MPEG, so you'll be able to tell if its a VCD or SVCD by the bitrate and resolution.

oops! forgot the topic
To find out kind of stream, i usually use tmpg tools demultiplexer.
When you load the stream for demultiplexing it reflex the properties of every stream present in video file whenever it be a mpg, m2v or vob.
Hope this helps..

Nope, MPEGprop.exe works for MPEG 1 and 2
There's a proggie called BitrateViewer, which shows a bunch of settings.
