I was having problems with my blank media from CD-Recordable.com so I ordered the following from ILY.com

First off, I actually spoke to someone at ILY on the phone to discuss their return policy in case there was any problems with the media. They indicated they would accept returns (burned or not). I have tried about 20 times to reach CD-Recordable.com by phone to discuss the problems I had with their media and have gotten the answering machine every single time. Makes me wonder if it's just somebody working out of their home.
I ordered a trial run of 10 blanks Friday morning and since I'm only a couple of hundred of miles away from them, they arrived via FedEx on Saturday.
The first thing I did was visually inspect all of them. No defects visible to the eye.
I've burned four (at 1x) so far and verified the data after burning. I used VOB Instant 6.4, Nero 5.5.8 and Gear 6.01 (more about the new version of Gear in another thread). Burning and verification were successful on all. Verification was performed by either selecting a verify option (Nero and Gear) or just copying the files back onto the hard drive (VOB doesn't have a verify option). Nero indicated a 2x speed was available but when I selected 2x the burn still occurred at 1x (unless I was in a time warp or something). Can't explain that mystery but I guess you should assume these are 1x media.
After burning and verifying the data I again visually inspected the recording surface. 3 of the disks look perfect, one disk had a small (maybe 1mm diameter) dark spot on it. My Sony standalone froze up and gave me the C:13 error the first time I tried to play the DVD with the dark spot. I then played the same DVD on a RCA standalone and it worked fine. Played it on a PS2 and it worked fine. Played it again on the Sony and this time it worked. Put it back in the A03 (to verify a second time) and read all files back to hard drive with no problems. I guess the Sony (several years old) is a little more sensitive than the other players.
I'm using DVD's to backup data files in addition to movies so data reliability is VERY important to me. The bottom line is that I am happy with the service and quality from ILY and plan on ordering more blanks from them. As long as the DVD ROM reads the disk with the dark spot, I'm not worried about it. Let me also say that I'm in no way affiliated with them except for being a satisfied customer.
