View Full Version : Should we all be using TV scale rather than PC scale for DVD to DivX rips?

Hope this isn't off-topic, but it does have to do with TMPG

I would refer you to:

IV. "Under the Quantize Matrix"

If the source comes from DVD2AVI this box should be ticked and the colours should be set to TV scale in DVD2AVI. By doing it this way, any detail above 235 and below 8 will be kept. It is VERY important to do this when encoding test patterns for setting brightness and contrast levels.

Alternatively, the box can be unticked, and the color set to PC scale in DVD2AVI. With it set this way, detail below 8 and above 235 is lost forever.
(also read the rest of the explanation in this section)

I only use TV scale rather than PC scale to get a higher resolution at the same bitrate for longer movies, but according to the above, I would be better off using TV scale all the time.

Or does it only apply to VCD rips rather than DivX rips? (I can't imagine how though).

Your comments?

For divx rips it's irrelivent as i stick to YUV Color spce, the native for mpeg2/dvd/svcd anyway ,i only convert to rgb when forced to, which i havent been yet.
