i bought a 50 pack of cds (a spindle), and i red the paper that goes around the cds (can't seem to remember what's its called), so anyway; it said not to put a label on the cd (the top side of the cd), why is that?

I can think of 2 reasons: Since the CD spins quite fast a label whould introduce 'wobbling'. And then there's also a few lesser intelligent persons who will try to remove the label and therefor ruin the layers. :)

What Swede said is true. What most people don't realize is that getting a scratch or trying to remove a label and damaging the top side of a cd is worse than getting a scratch on the written side. The cd acts like a mirror and the top layer that reflects is not very thick. Only use a marker or sharpy to write on it also.

other than 'wobbling', i should use labels, right?

No, just write on the CD with a pen...

Some people claim the solvent used for the adhesive of the label will destroy the CD-R with time ...
As for wobbling, I never experienced problems, even in high-speed drives.

Hi,

I do this quite often....I have over 650 encodes, and over half of them have inkjet-printed labels.

It doesn't affect the playback or performance at all, and as for the issue that scratching or damaging the top, that's true.

However, I'd rather have a thick piece of paper on the top of the cd protecting it....:)

Best use CDRs that have a good protection coating all over the surface. CDRs that are silver at the top don't have any coating and are damaged really fast.
A protected surface (like those from Kodak, Mitsui and TDK) is worth a lot. At least for me, who likes to pile up his cd's sometimes and not put them back in the jewel box... ;)
