Some studios have hardware that they developed with manufacturers.

Others use the Sonic SD-1000 (and soon the SD-2000).

There may be other hardware encoders used but the above are all I know of.

Spruce MPX-3000 used to be available too, before Spruce were sadly taken over by Apple and forcibly divorced from the Windows fraternity as a consequence. It wouldn't surprise me if the MPX-3000 eventually reappears in a modified form for use with MAC OS, assuming that this is possible.

Speed issues aside, it has to be said that Cinemacraft and TMPGEnc really are SUPERB software encoders - please do not underestimate how professional a job these encoders are capable of churning out - if you have the time to let them run, they will give the vast majority (although admittedly not the very VERY best) of hardware encoders a run for their money.

N.B. The above links were also posted here:

But since I am not asking for a reply in either that, or this, instance, but rather just providing links for readers to do as they please, I feel the double-posting is justified. I'm open to criticism on this though

You have also Osprey card wich are widely used by professionnal (as the osprey2000) for small budget prod (card is about 3000 USD).
According me, you won't find any real difference with cheaper cards except the professional DV,SDI,Analog inputs.

There's also professionnal solution from Pinnacle for live encoding , but that rise easily 200 000 USD ...

sorry for the late answer, but I had to wait 5 days until I got registered here and be allowed to answer...

A friend of mine just purchased a vidac mpg2-transcoder card from vidac.de for about 300€ (=290$). He said that it makes a great and fast job in any transcoding job he has used it for so far.
For comparision: a 1,5h movie that used to take more than 6h to transcode into SVCD-format on a P4 1,7GHz-Machine would be transcoded in about 16 min. with that card. It also has a TV-Tuner on board an can be used as an analog mpg2-capture card.
Anybody in need of speed might want to have a look at that.

so long
