Hi,

I downloaded DivX Pro 5.01 today (been out of town) and started my first encode with it.

I'm encoding Spy Game, with 2-pass mode, 1000kps, b-frames and GMC, light psycho.

Same setting I've been using for other encodes, btw.

My speed is much faster....First pass was around 12-13fps average, with the second pass (still in progress) around 16-17 fps.

This is much faster than with 5.0, where first pass speeds were around 8-10 fps, and 2nd pass around 12-13fps (with use mv info checked, of course).

Anyone else seen this? Other than the update for DivX, I haven't installed or deleted anything on my comp, or installed new hardware...

I have used DivX 5.01 a lot during the weekend with no increase in speed compared to DivX 5.0.

Computer is Athlon 1300, 256 MB memory, XP.

I'm using Gordian Knot to create a frameserver file and then I do the encoding in VirtualDub 1.4.9. I use smart deinterlace and normal bicubic resizing.

On first pass encoding speed it normally ~9 fps and on the second pass 11-12 fps. These are the same numbers I got in DivX 5.0

What computer are you using to get your speed?

Hi,

My comp is an Athlon 800 Thunderbird, with 448 MB RAM.

I was using Vdub 1.4.8, but have since upgraded to Vdub 1.4.10

I've double checked, and all my settings are the same as before.

Don't know the cause.....but I'm happy with it! :)

Did you perhaps mean Athlon 1800 Thunderbird? ;)

Yes, I guess that could be it :)

But on the other hand ... 448 Mb of Ram ...

I don't know if Dragoman is using Win XP, but since XP is rather memory consuming, and on my PC, avisynth uses between 160~200 MB ram, bringing the whole mem usage till 260-270 mb ram.
I guess that is why dragoman is faster ...

I now have 512 mb RAM, and before i had 256 mb ...
The speed increase in about 20% with the extra 256 mem (of course my Asus nForce Twin-bank could be responcible for that, since I now get 60-68 fps in Geiss plugin for winamp, and before it was 35-40 fps).
Memory bandwith has its advantages :p

So to N_F ; Try more RAM memory, and see what happens.
( type ctrl-alt-del while encoding, and see how much mem your apps use)

Also, win ME uses less memory, and before I encoded faster on my PC, using ME.
check out my thread on the forum about XP/ME speed difference.

So you don't think he miswrote?

Although XP uses a lot of memory I doubt it's that. Perhaps he's using some other encoding method than me that makes it faster.

Hi,

No, no mistake, I wrote 800. (AMD doesn't make an 1800 Thunderbird that I know of....)

Could be the RAM, but why didn't I get this speed using DivX 5.0, only after I upgraded to 5.01?

Also, my method is just to use Gknot to rip the dvd, process the vobs using dvd2avi, then use the avisynth filters to get the avs files.

Then I use Vdub to encode the movie.

That's it.

Oh yeah, I'm using WinXP Pro.

I don't know about that either, Maybe different settings? (I guess not, ...).
Different optimizations for AMD are not implemented AFAIK.

Dunno what could be the couse of the speed difference.
