This is probably a gross newbie question, for which I'll be creamed, but is there any way to capture digital video (from Sony DV Handycam) and compress it more on the fly to take up less space? A search through the forums has yielded nothing on the question.

I want to transfer 60 minute tapes to SVCD and after capturing 6 seconds in Premiere 6.0 I have a file 50Mb large!!

Bite the bullet. If you are going to do DV video a hundred buck 40 gig drive sounds like a no brainer. DV files are BIG!

If you are not interested in editing, AND you have a fast machine, you might get away with Ulead's DVD workshop which also does SVCDs. It allows an alternative "on the fly direct to mpeg capture" that works well. Thes files are much smaller. (of couse the program is 250 bucks so maybe the bigger HD looks better to you?)

Thanks for the reply. Hmmm, extra hard drive or expensive software?? I think I'll buy more hard drive - useful for other things. Just wanted to know if there was an alternative.
