Hi all,
I just noticed that suxen_drol added bframe "support" code to the CVS. Anybody know what it does ? (I know i'm lazy) It dosn't enable B-frames, at least not in the VFW frontend.

That is just a core update.
The code is commented out - and if you activate it the core won't compile anymore.
So just be patient :) (I'm looking forward to it too and as you can see I tried to activate and use it ;) )
Regards,
Koepi
Ouch! That was a big merge...
I'll have to play with it before I figure out what actually got merged, but from memory it was incomplete...

personally I wouldn't be too excited about b-frames.. b-frames alone won't do any wonders as we've seen with divx5... I'm more excited about alex helping out with the me.. I think in the end it will mean much more... and underrating an upcoming feature will lead to you being much happier when it turns out that you did underrate it... and if it's been hyped too much you'll just be disappointed

Well, after having made numerous tests between divx5 pro (and dixv5.01) and the latest xvid, i believe that xvid is again a little bit superior. And this without the b-frames. That's why i am very curious to see what will xvid be capable of when it has b-frames.
Is more or less like this: "if it can do this without them, what will it do when it has them" :D

Yes but if you are a pessimist you don't push for more :).
Anyway i don't think that b-frames will improve the compression much, unless b-frames will be quantized at a higher level from the rest(like in divx5) which i don't think is the way to go. The exception is special content, like a football match, which "elements" of the frames are repeated over and over.

What about anime?
Anime happens to be very similar from frame to frame. Unfortunately its sharp edges is bad with the IDTC(or does MPEG4 use another transformation I just kinda assume its the same transformation).

cryect: anime doesnt benefit from b-frames much, its efect of "shimmering" is seen way too easy there.
such features as motion masking, gmc, qpel, fade support and other not implemented mpeg4 techniques will help it much more. more better ME wont hurt either :-)

Yes, I agree with Doom9, personally I prefer to have G-frame,
not the B-frame. LoL.

Some of the biggest improvements can be found using edge-detection techniques (can be implemented independently of the MPEG-4 spec, just intelligently assign bits), and MPEG4's shape-adaptive DCT which would behave quite a bit better on anime-type lines, from what I've read.
But I have no idea when they're appearing :)

Well, i just thought that, since you guys are doing all this for free, and only for the chalenge (right? :)), i am afraid that some day, xvid could get it's development stopped.
It would be legitime, since you guys have your private life, and if something better appears, like a great paid job at some new video codec enterprise (:D), it would be just normal if you take it.
