Does anyone have any information on how to create DVD subtitles? I know you could simply hard encode the subtitles into the video stream but I would like to have them be optional.

Look up MaestroSBT - it can generate subtitle script for Scenarist (i think) format; which you can multiplex into VOB as a selectable sub.

I assume that you target is to get subtitles into vob file and then create dvd (DVD-R maybe) of them, which you can play on your dvd player with possibility to select the subs. If this is the case I suggest my solution. That maybe it is not very feasible and the best of the solution but I use it and at least I know what I am doing (to certain extend). My target was that once I have vob file I do not alter it and still shall be able to add subs to it. So I do not mux or demux anything. I use for this software called “DVD subtitle creator” (http://www.bernclare.com/subtitle.htm). It allows you to multiplex subtitles into vob (you may do it either on the screen by typing text and get time code from the video or if you have time codes you may prepare subtitles a priori and then multiplex them into vob. Then I use IfoEdit to recreate dvd structures (by doing this you will get only playable movie/movies with no menus and other stuff). You have to go into ifo files later and change the color of the subs so you can see them in white or yellow (BTW did anyone of you figured out what parameters shall be put in this 15 color lines in ifo file – I just get them from other ifo files from dvds and I usually get the yellow or white subs but I have no clue why it is yellow or white). So I hope this will help you to start. Regards.:)
