It's now become real on LAME.
I added the code to support Average BitRate to the LAME CVS. So check out your usual LAME binary places (alpha version) it should appear soon.
Otheriwse I'll put some binaries somewhere.

Did I miss something here? What do you mean exactly - API support for ABR modes like in the EXE now also for the LAME.DLL or for the LAME ACM?

First observation about abr: the control sliders are...fuzzy...

Uh ? What do you mean ?
Only the test slider is a bit weird (I haven't found how to force the cursor only on valid values). The rest is normal (you can't enter the value by hand).
Otherwise, yes it's in the ACM codec, so encoding with VirtualDub, flaskMpeg, etc on the fly.

As an example they allow some strange values (a minimum bitrate of 88kbps possible?).
I was also unable to specify 256kbps as a min value.
Honestly I think that for abr you should perhaps not offer the min/max frame customization as a possibility. Usually acm users will be beginners, and such options could puzzle them.
Even advanced users usually don't use min/max when encoding in abr.
I didn't looked inside the code what your "dual channel" setting was mapping to, but you should know that there is no dual channel mode working in Lame.
One last thing: those comments might seems bad, but they are not. I appreciate you work, and the purpose of my comments is only to make things better.

oops, I just managed to freeze the codec configuration by playing with the sliders... I had to kill it.
