Just sharing the info.

My Asus 8x dvd-rom couldnt rip with SmartRipper, kept giving me "Locked" errors. I replaced it with a 16x hi-val, and Smartripper worked flawlessly.

Only strange thing, the Asus 8x did perfectly for everything else. Not sure if there is a list of DVD-roms that are better for ripping, but thought Id share my experience.

Did you try installing forceASPI? or reinstalling your ATA drivers? I seriously doubt there is a dvd drive out there that can't be tweaked into ripping a dvd as all it is required to do is read it byte by byte and let smartripper and your CPU do all the real work.
Windows2k makes things alittle more complicated but nothing you can't find a solution to.

I didnt try ForceASPI, but The drive worked with every program but smartripper. I tried both win98 and winxp, neither worked.

I get the same error with my 12X toshiba when ever i do a clean install of win2k untill i use forceASPI. What hard drive controller are you using? If its any of the VIA controlers i would try using their Miniport driver so you can use IDEtool to change exactly what mode the drive set to.
