Hello,
as a consequence of my previous thread on surround, I would like to produce SVCDs with two audio tracks: One in my native language, and the other in english. I would like to have surround capability on one track, so I would choose 160 or 192 in stereo with downmix set to surround. The other track I would like for brushing up my english. So here I would live with a very low bitrate, like 64 or 96 with joint stereo setting and downmix in stereo. From the previous thread I figured that mp2 joint stereo is directional stereo, so I would not want this on the primary audio. This far, the DVD2SVCD interface only offers one setting for both. When I did a search here, I found a recipe which included halting via "edit script" and then exchanging one of the audio files by running besweet with a corrected batch file. On the other hand, DVD2SVCD uses a jobfile, which contains a lot of settings, including audio tracks.

First question is this: Can this jobfile be edited (possibly during ripping or piping) to use different encodes for the two tracks. (And if yes, where is the key switch for the audio mode?)

Second question: Many posts say that stereo is the best choice anyway. This however is usually made in the context of bitrates of 160+. Does this statement actually hold true for a track done in 96 or less?

Third question: I have a few dvds which only have a mono sound. Now shoud I encode this to mp2 in joint stereo at half the usual bitrate? Or should I use Stereo? What I am getting at is that with R+L and R-L, basically the second channel is empty. So half the bitrate should be fine. But which mode will encode this way? Stereo?

I wish I would understand mp2 audio a bit better!

have a nice weekend
