View Full Version : Do any capture cards deinterlace on the fly?

As I see it there are some software filters like Decomb that can do a 'kinda' deinterlace (I know it's not true deinterlace for which you would need to know the field order and process in TMPGenc et al). So why is there nothing similar for capture cards so you capture directly to say an AVI file doing a similar thing? Is it purely down to speed (I.E. the card not being fast enough to do that and capture/compress to hard disk at the same time)? Or lazyness on the capture card developers in implementing such a feature? If it can be done as a filter then surely it can be done at the capture stage no?

because most deinterlacers reduce the theoretical quality of the clip that way or another when REAL interlaced clips are concerned (although it's arguable that REALLY good deinterlacers (hardware mostly) might percievably enhance it).

interlaced clip is basically 2 fields captured into a single frame. these 2 fields are originally from 2 different times, and are just merged while capturing into a single frame.

so to preserve maximum clip information, u must have the encoded file interlaced.

of course, not all sources are REALLY interlaced. i.e. films may seem interlaced (after they've been converted to pal or ntsc), but they're originally 24fps, so it's possible to completely convert them back to 24fps non-interlaced without loosing any information.

so interlaced capture retains maximum quality. what u do with that is up to u..

I've seen that the latest winnt/2k/xp Drivers for the Hauppauge PCI series uses built in code from the DScaler projekt.

You can see in the drivers license.

I think they use the great deinterlacing from DScaler to improve image quality.
It became noticeable by deinterlace the picture with DScaler again.

from the hauppage website:WinTV running under Windows XP has a new feature called "de-interlacer". This feature improves the video quality of TV running on your PC screen. For example, if you've noticed lines in your TV picture when watching a football game, or when watching a news ticker, the WinTV's new de-interlacer will remove the lines.
De-interlacer requires the latest WinTV driver for Windows XP and the latest WinTV application, which are listed below.Unfortunately, it's ONLY the XP drivers that have the new deinterlace function.

However I have read an article recently that Hauppage (and others) will use a new chip for their next cards which features a hardware deinterlacer. I can't find any info on the web, but I think the article was in the latest c't magazine (German magazine).
