Hi everyone!
I don't know why but the rendering with WMP really sux with one Divx I've just encoded, but is ok with other divx5 movies... I'dont know why.
Besides, the Divx is perfect with The Playa.
Any ideas? here is a screenshot of the movie played in WMP.
It's Usual Suspects
with bframes and bi-directional.

(I didn't know attachement feature wasn't working...sorry!)

Does your dcreen colour depth is set to 16 bit? This may be the problem. Try to set to 24 or 32 bit. It worked 4 me.
Maybe you are using a horizontal resolution, that is not a multiple of 32? That was my problem with XviD. I think it's an issue with the graphics driver. I had the probs on a Geforce 2 Pro.

Yup! it worked when I'm in 32 bits!! but then the quality is perfect with The Playa when I'm in 16 bits?!

something else: your screenshot seems to be a little squeezed, are you sure you picked the right aspect ratio?
The picture is 670x222 - is that your resolution? You know that this is dividable by 2 only, while artefact-free divx 5 requires H:16 W:16 ???

does that mean height and width has to be dividable by 16 and then the movie will have artifacts (i have artifacts and do not know why)?
what resolution would you recommend fopr divx ?

When Width and Height are not dividable by 16, you have a high risk of getting pink lines and dots in Divx5 movies - I had an "explosion" of pink pixels in my first try, looked really funny!
In addition to that, you might get overlay problems on many graphics adapters and certain display settings, like in your case (I bet the other movies that caused no problems had a resolution at least dividable by 4 or 8, if not 16 - right?)
I can't recommend any special resolution for Divx, it depends on the source and the bitrate - best use Gordian Knot to determine the best resolution (Gknot also helps finding the right resolution that fits your bitrate and compressibility).
In short: Gordian Knot rules!!! :)

damn - i just tried that with a resolution dividable by 16 (704x576) but i still have artifacts in the playback.
does anyone know other reasons for those artifacts then the ones already discussed in this forum ?

Can you post some screenshot?
Anyway try disabling:
1) Psycovisual modelling (this is not working at all)
2) Resize inside the codec (sometimes may cause problem)
3) GMC (4 someone it cause aritfacts)
4) Quarter pel (same as above)

can you tell me how to take screenshots from a divx movie (i never did that) ?

What the hell have you done?? :) 670x222? Thats an approximate ratio of 3:1, for a 2.35:1 movie!
"damn - i just tried that with a resolution dividable by 16 (704x576) but i still have artifacts in the playback"
Your aspect ratio is off again.
Maybe the stretching of the image is causing the artifacts? Encode at 640x272. (If you're using gknot, ensure that 16:9 is selected!)

Secondly, are you using WMP 6.4 or WMP7/8? I'd recommend using WMP 6.4, which you can run by going to start...run and typing mplayer2.
That way you can configure the Divx decoder filter and change the post-processing options.

Some graphics adapters need a W:32 H:16 resolution - try such a resolution and you'll be on the safe side.

the artifacts in playback are gone after switching to DivX 5.0.1 pro !!!

Though I never had this problem, I can reproduce it on my config if I uncheck "use overlays" in WMP8 at tools/options/performance/advanced.
