View Full Version : perfect blue - a question
was wondering.. i have the region 4/2 version (it
was cheap:D), and it is an interlaced pal source,
making me suspect it's a conversion from telecined
ntsc version. Is the ntsc dvd a progressive film
version?
Perhaps not the right forum, but...

No, the ntsc dvd is not progressive.
not a very well done dvd then, I suppose. It SHOULD
have been progressive, and even more important, anamorphic.
And the transfer is not exactly the best there is either.
Oh well, can't have it all. Great movie though. :D

I think I can add this to this thread because it also deals with the quality of DVD's:
I encounter more and more DVD's that lack the original English sound and only have two German audio tracks - I hope this is not going to be a new "region-code reinforcement" or something?
Two of the DVDs that lacked the original sound were cheaper supermarket-versions of "Seven" and "Trainspotting" (the latter also had a horrible picture quality), but the last one was the official "Hannibal" uncut edition. It was labelled "not for sale - for rental only" because it was bought at a video-rental (the only place you can buy the uncut so-called "FSK18" versions in Germany). First I thought Smartripper had messed it up, but then I saw there was only German audio on the DVD.
Are we going to lose on of the best features of DVD's - that they come with the original audio - to some pseudo anti-piracy measures??
I can tell all the anti-piracy guys that a lot of people, including me, will think twice before they buy a DVD that lacks the original audio track.
This is not exactly a "feature" that will make DVD's sell better...
Believe it or not:
In UK and Ireland DVDs are more expensive as in germany. Now to stop people from importing DVDs from germany ( remember, they are same region ) there is no english track or if it's there, then you have enforced german subtitles, that cannot be muted.
And about the quality... there are two sides... some get better, some get worse. The only solution is: Don't buy crap!!

In UK and Ireland DVDs are more expensive as in germany.Even more expensive? That is especially weird as people in Ireland tend to earn less than in Germany...
I mean, they always forget one important thing: they can try to stop piracy and maybe they can bring it down to a minimum - but this will not force people to buy more originals (well, maybe some few more, but not even enough to cover the costs of the anti-piracy campaigns...)
you have enforced german subtitles, that cannot be mutedOh, you can... convert it to DivX ;)
