View Full Version : Purpose of safe mode ?

I recall the history of safe mode was to fix cce crash issues. I was hoping that with this thread we might collect issues that people have identified that ARE fixed with safe mode on the encode.
Particularly, I only get crashes now between passes and I would like to know whether anyone has found safe mode to address this problem. All crashes between passes that I have had have NOT been fixed by trying in safe mode. Is this consistent with other people's findings?
By the way - ALL my other crashes have been fixed by stabilising my PC, the memory I had did not run well in my motherboard. I now have a different chipset and all is well.

I recently added 256 MB of RAM so I've now got 2 x 256 MB RAM. And I got a freeze while encoding with 5 pass VBR :(
I knew before adding the RAM that this could happen, given what I'd read on this board before.
Using VFAPI (safe mode) fixed the problem as expected, but of course it's a little slow for my liking. But ~0.878 is good enough, and it's great that DVD2SVCD now supports VFAPI ;)
Anyway, it would appear that my problem is avisynth related whereas yours was specifically related to CCE.

After many many problems, I have come to some conclusion to relevance of safe mode on my machine:
When I try to encode in multipass VBR in "normal" mode, CCE dies when it switches from VAF creation to MPV creation. When running in safe mode,it will move oon to the MPV creation, but will lock at some point during the encode.
In Single pass VBR with "normal" mode, I get the same crash between VAF and MPV creation ( a full application crash, not just a freeze or lock). In safe mode, the encode completes successfully, but I have had some slight trouble with playback (I get the "avisynth has caught a general blah blah blah" at the top of the top of the file viewer). I am currently working to resolve these problems, and have tried everything and I do mean everything that has been mentioned on these boards.
I was going to post when I had free time as to exactly what the safe mode does. I know it uses VFAPI, but something more specific might help me to determine what my problems are.
