I've been reading a lot in regards to the crc patch solving problems with CCE encodes with athlons and certain chipsets but I was wondering if there is a downside to using it. Does the final encode take a hit in terms of quality?

The CRC patch, as far as I can tell, itself will not cause the image to degrade. However the error itself is an indication of a problem. Now whether this problem is very minor and will not affect quality or whether the problem is a major one and will affect quality varies between each machine. What the patch does is has CCE ignore the error. It doesn't matter if it happens only once or on every frame the error will be ignored. The only way to know for certain is to try it on your machine. If you are not getting the error don't install the patch. If you are gettting it randomly I would not install it either and just start the encode over again when you do get it. If you get it all the time and have already tried to stabalize your computer more by slowing your memory timings and dropping any overclocking you are doing then go ahead and install it. There are some computers that need the patch no matter what. I have an AMD based system and I have only gotten the CRC error once and have decided not to install the patch.

I have 2 AMD systems and I haven't gotten the crc error, so I never installed the patch.
