Disco Strobe Light effect !?? Help

I recently made a backup of 'Trigger Happy TV 2 ' from my DVD. I set all the options on DVD2SVCD to default as usual. The DVD is region 2 PAL.The conversion went well however when I play the disks on my DVD player it looks like you are watching it through a Disco Strobe light - if you get my drift. When characters move in the film they appear 'jerky'.

I ran the conversion again and selected 'smartinterlace' and this seems to have corrected the problem. What is happening here can anyone tell me?? I noticed this on a 'backup' of the film 'the Others' that I acquired recently also? My DVD player plays all my other SVCD's perfectly.

Oh forgot to mention that the first backup of TH TV2 looked fin eon my computer which makes me believe that it has something to do with interlacing?

sometimes, disabling "upper field first" helps as well

Also you can download a program called "bitrate viewer" and view the vob files 2 see what selections you might need 2 make. Also if you use this program dont view the first vob file, as it might not reflect what the movies field order truly is.
