VBulletin can allow users to delete their own posts. This can be useful for people who post a question and then realise they were doing something dumb and so can remove it. Might help keep forums slightly cleaner. Sort of self moderation.

The only draw back is that sometimes really sneaky users start a flame war and then delete their posts. Having said that I don't think I have ever seen anyone succesfully pull that off.

Just a suggestion...

Some boards I have seen allow the user to self delete until there is one response. I like this idea in the case of an Oh never mind type post.

@markrb: once again you're asking for a hack. people tend to change the subject or edit their posts to indicate that they want it deleted if they've found a solution for their problem.

Some do. Some don't. Either way it saves time and hassle for a moderator if users can do it themselves. Unless you like keeping them busy ;)

Just for other readers info. Markrb's suggestion would have to be a hack but my suggestion isn't. Just edit the "Registered Group" and the option for deletion is under "Post/Thread Editing Permissions".

I wasn't really asking for a hack since I have no idea what the software allows and does not allow an admin to do. I was just reporting what I had seen at another board and I have no idea what software they run.
If it requires a hack it isn't worth the effort, but I don't like the idea of being able to delete a post once there are replies. The person who originally posted it may be embarassed, but the answers may help others.
I have also seen the way Doom9 talked about by letting a user change the subject to please delete or something.
