Unable to get anything to work

I am having one major problem when burning. I am using Nero cause it seems like the only one that will burn a dvd-r. I ll be frank that i am using a cheap QUE QPS dvd-r/ram burner. When i try and use InstantVOB with a dvd-r media, it will not burn. with dvd-ram it will. now with nero, it burns fine. so here is the problem. The dvd-r will not play in my toshiba 4700 dvd player which definatly plays dvd-r but it will play in my dvd-rom drive with no problem. I get a disc error in the dvd player. why is this. is this nero? how can I get instantVOB to work. nothing else burns successfully except nero. just lost for words. Had the drive for over 3 weeks and no luck with a single dvd copy/creation

ps- of the two dvd-r that do not work on standalone player, one was a copy of a movie and the second one was home videos created successfully with reeldvd. if important.

someone please help me, i am ready to sell the drive and wait till things get better.

As a first guess I'd say try other dvd-r media first before you buy another burner.

I noticed when I put a blank dvd-r in that instantVOB started automatically which it never did before. So i tryed to burn it again with InstantVOB and this time it burned and it worked on my dvd player. first time ever. I think that when I installed nero, it must of installed some kind of .dll needed for InstantVOB to recognize dvd-r. i will be keeping nero on my system but i will not be using it.
